Why do vents matter for wildfire safety?
Most homes lost in wildfires are not lost to direct flame contact — they are lost to embers that travel ahead of the fire and enter through ordinary attic, soffit, crawl space, and foundation vents. A single unprotected vent can let embers ignite a home from the inside, even when the yard and the rest of the structure are well maintained.
Is this required by law?
California code requires ember-resistant vents on new construction and on qualifying remodels, re-roofs, or re-sides in designated wildfire hazard zones. It is not a blanket mandate forcing every existing home to retrofit today. That said, insurers increasingly ask about vent type at renewal, and documented upgrades can support eligibility for wildfire-hardening discounts, including through the California FAIR Plan.
Will this lower my insurance premium?
